Annual Christmas Party

We enjoyed a wonderful time of warm fellowship last night at our annual Christmas Party hosted this year by Kay! Her house was the perfect spot to gather, eat the food we brought, and poke around her creative space. Thanks, Kay! As usual, the highlight was our card exchange and none of us were disappointed! (Well, that's not true. I was disappointed Gretchen didn't come up with something to top last year's snow-globe card!)

November 2011 Meeting

Kimmie used scraps of stuff she had around her house to make these cool textured bits of art! Any photos you might have? Send them my way and we'll get them up!

Here are some pics of the gift tags we made

Welcome & Announcements:
**Surveys were passed out for us to fill in and return to Kathie H asking what we liked about our programs, workshops, or topics last year and what we’d like to see in the coming year. The board plans to use the information to plan next year’s events.
**Cecelia would teach Carolingian at the next Back 2 Basics class on Saturday the 19th.
**Our new website www.summitscribes.org is up and running. Hopefully anyone interested in lettering arts will be able to find us on the web. A bulk of news for our members will come through the e-Digest and/or the Summit Scribes blog.
**Cecelia asked for volunteers to help find and plan a spring retreat. Kathy S agreed to head that up with Cheryl, Tammi Jo, Mary R, and Karen S helping out.
**Forty-four actual pages of the St. John’s Bible will be on display in Santa Fe until April. Maybe a road trip is in order! If so, talk to Cheryl
**Cecelia passed around a Michael Jacobs paper folder/scoring tool she made from part of a paper clip with directions for making one ourselves.

Show & Tell:
**The FREE table was full again and there were several drawings from the Kristin Doty workshop as well as a variety of card ideas. Our homework/project drawing went to Cheryl.

Presentation:
**Deb, Carole R, Karen S, Kimmie, and Tammi Jo showed us how to make 5 different holiday gift tags from supplies they brought. Deb had a folding tag with a Christmas ball on the front, Carole die cut pieces of a city snow scene for us to assemble, Karen had a Christmas sticker on a red square with a red ribbon, Kimmie had us cut white circles and brown branches for our snowman, and TJ had us roll thin strips of paper to glue onto a stamped snowflake.

Samples of homework/projects above and a few pictures of all the action making our Tyvek book covers! It was great fun, just like being in kindergarten again! Thanks, Candy!

Presentation:
**Candy presented a fun and easy way to create sturdy book covers using Tyvek fabric that can be purchased in small amounts at local kite shops. She passed out large, white Tyvek envelopes to each of us, thanks to Compassion Int., and asked us to open them up at the seam and lay them flat. (We could choose to crinkle them if we wanted added texture.) With several colors of acrylic paint on paper plates, we were instructed to coat our piece of Tyvek with water and paint away in any combination/pattern we chose.

Photos from our August meeting

Thanks for the tri-fold card demonstration, Cecelia, and all the time you put into making our meeting a success! Here is a glimpse of what some of our members have been working on. Cheryl Cary brought a beautiful charcoal portrait of her grandson Finn and I am so sorry I didn't get a picture of that (but I'll post it if someone else did!)

Minutes from August

Meeting Minutes 9 August 2011
26 present
6:50 PM start

Intro:
**We began with an extended time of show and tell and since we had a number of visitors, we also did introductions--telling a little bit about ourselves and why we like calligraphy. We took a few minutes and asked those who attended the IAMPETH to share something about the conference
Books from the book fair were on the table for perusal and purchase.

Business:
**Our next workshop will be November 5/6 with Krisitin Doty. All skill levels are welcomed to learn more about drawing for calligraphers.

Presentation:
**Cecelia showed us how to make a great tri-fold card using a fun monoline alphabet she modeled with a B3/B4 nib. After passing out clear templates for us to cut at home, lined paper to practice at our seats, and an exemplar, she showed us how to use the nib making sure the rounded end was flat on the paper. Again, the overhead camera/projector came in handy. She went around the room to make sure we all understood where to cut and how to fold. We look forward to see what everyone has created next month!

Article on the necessity of calligraphy

BTW, what a wonderful guild meeting last night. Thanks to all who attended and who made our five newbies feel welcome.

Denis Brown

A note from Denis Brown with a link to his homepage. http://www.quillskill.com/
(Purchasing his 6 part series might be a good purchase for our guild.)

Denis Brown here with my calligraphy news mail for August 2011

A 3rd module, 'Freeing the Rhythm: Variation & Swing' is complete & available by online subscription and for those who have pre-ordered the DVD set.
6 new movies on 'Wild Swash Capitals' were uploaded today to Calligraphy.TV to complete the third module in the program, 'Italic Rhythm to Polyrhythm, Expanding Writing Dynamics'. With 108 minutes of video, this is significantly larger than either of the preceding modules on Italic, yet remains at the same price.

Link 1: Subscription and pre-ordering info.
Link 2: Watch the Calligraphy.TV sample movies.

The program as a whole is outlined at www.calligraphy.tv, below is a note on the new module.

Freeing the Rhythm: Variation & Swing
Advanced exercises to liven the italic with increased dynamics and a freer interpretation of rhythmic principles outlined in the Italic Theory & Practice module. Extremely advanced techniques with 'Dangerous lines' and 'Wild swash capitals' will challenge even highly experienced calligraphers. Nonetheless, all levels may be thrilled just watching the live video demonstrations, and picking up useful information without feeling need to master all that is presented right away.
Well over 5 hours of video is now online at Calligraphy.TV including basic advice all the way up to precise instruction on my advanced personal techniques. I have previously announced the complete program would include six hours worth of videos, now it looks likely to have more than eight hours. It may be 2012 before it is all complete, although I am devoting all my time to this when I am not traveling to teach.

Those who have pre-ordered may feel excitement from experiencing the development of this ambitious project as they watch new sections online, as they are released. They may also feel good that their pre-payment directly facilitates my commitment of time to the project. Also they benefit from remaining unaffected from likely price increases due to bad US dollar performance against Euro, as they look forward to a very special package in the mail on publication. (See the forewarning below about impending price increase).

My travelling for workshops in Chicago, Minnesota and Switzerland will provide a break from production until September, and then I shall be developing the more experimental module of the program regarding polyrhythmic calligraphy.

Apple's iPad with its ultra flat 9" screen may be the coolest way to watch calligraphy.tv right at your calligraphy table. Since I received my iPad 2 I've been working to making sure all works well on this device, as also on PC and Mac desktop and laptop computers.

A Forewarning!
Weak US Dollar rate means pricing must increase in September. Pre-order now to save. I live in Ireland and use Euros but for the convenience of my many US buyers, I price in dollars. The dollar has devalued a lot against the Euro in the past year and my pricing unfortunately needs to be redressed. This notification is a chance to get ahead of the price increase. Those who pre-order are fully pre-paid and will be immune to any price changes.

Turn your calligraphy into Christmas Cards . . . starting: now!

Time again to think about working smart.  There are only 146 days left until Christmas so now is the time to get thinking, planning and implementing those vague concepts you’ve been stashing away at the back of your brain.  If you want to do a bit of back-planning, you have about 12 weeks to get your design into a finished form, ready to print.
If you spent the next two weeks on design, that would leave you 10 weeks to work out the execution of your idea.  After that you would have about three weeks for production (copying or scanning, printing, assembling), addressing envelopes and then being ready to mail your cards in late November or ready to hand out at a certain December Guild meeting. Think about it and decide to make your own action plan to finish on time and not stressed.

Minutes from May

Meeting Minutes 10 May 2011
22 present

The meeting started at 7 pm after some “shopping time” spent looking at paper, mats, frames, books, and ribbon Lonnie had to part with. All donations were added to the guild funds, per Lonnie’s request. THANK YOU!! Lonnie!
Cecelia made a few quick announcements and asked for any additions from the members. *Kristen Doty is planning on coming out for our fall workshop.
*The next play date will be next Saturday the 21st at Cecelia’s where we’ll be stenciling her logo SUMMIT SCRIBES onto tee-shirts we bring washed from home.
*Pre-registration for the 2011 International Calligraphy Conference in Portland opens June 1st.
We had a time of show and tell from what we worked on last month (several Zentangle works of art!) Cheryl passed around her handouts from last month for those of us who weren’t able to make it.
Kay did a great job opening up the world of lettering on fabric to us. She brought washed muslin taped to boards for us to practice on and gave us tips and helpful hints along the way such as the best pens, pencils, and paints to use when writing on fabric. She told us the advantages of acrylic inks and paints and reminded us NOT to use them with our good brushes and to wash our nibs out right away! She encouraged us to look on line at textile printing or painting sites for more ideas.
THANK YOU, Kay!

Carl Rohrs Workshop Highlights

Carl Rohrs rolled into town for his 2nd of three workshops. The new camera and slide set up allows us to stay in our seats as he demonstrates, freeing us to follow along or take notes from our seats! It's a terrific teaching tool! Each workshop is a combination of demonstrations and show and tell, one on one help and guidance, and slides of work he has traveled the world to see in museum and private collections. He introduced us to paper cutwork last month and brought in more exampes for us to see up close.

Deb's Creations

At our March meeting, Deb showed how we can take an idea we see from a store-bought card and use it in making one of our own. Here are several photos (thanks to Carole!) of examples she gave. The store-bought card is on the left and the new one she created next to it.

This was a terrific demonstration by the "Queen of Cards"!
Scroll down for MORE of her original creations!!
