Welcome & Announcements:

**Jim’s marbling workshop was a success with 6 people participating.  Several brought papers they made to show and share

**This year’s International Conference was canceled last year.  Next year’s event is slated for June 22-29, 2024 in Davenport, IA.

 

Show & Share:

**Tom has kept up with his quote a day, 164 of them to this point, and has filled 66 pages in his notebook!

**Sherry brought some pretty pink and black marbled paper and made a book mark to show the paper can be lettered on.

**Candy covered a ready-made journal to create a marbled Junk Journal.

**Cecelia brough several examples of pieces she’s been working on in Brody’s on-line classes, one on collage and the other on the Magic of Kozo, using Japanese rice paper.  

 

Evening Presentation:

**TJ gave a short history on Neuland, reminded folks how to hold the pen for maximum success, and had 3 handouts of examples as well as Randy Hasson’s exemplar.  She made her way through the entire alphabet explaining how to flip the pen over to flare the edges, fill in anything we’d like to clean up.  There is a certain rhythm that eventually comes with making these fun and chunky letters!

Linda and Rich Page attended our 5/9/2023 Summit Scribes meeting as docents of the first of their seven (7) folios of Donald Jackson’s Saint John’s Bible, Heritage Edition. The folio is on tour and when all 7 of the folios are obtained, they will be permanently housed and on display at Saint Michael’s Episcopal Church here in Colorado Springs, CO.

 

A 45-minute video was shown to us to start off our meeting. This film was produced by the BBC and followed Donald Jackson’s beginnings with the project in 1998 at his home in Wales, all the way through to the completed folios being presented to the Benedictine monks at Saint John’s University in Minnesota, USA. To create a Bible that would capture the beauty and tradition of centuries of liturgy and carry it into the future—that was the vision that united a calligrapher in Wales with this group of Benedictine monks in Minnesota. The Saint John’s Bible is the first completely handwritten and illuminated Bible to be commissioned by a Benedictine abbey since the invention of the printing press. The project was headed by Donald Jackson, and work on the manuscript took place in both Wales and Minnesota. I was in awe that in the preliminary stages of choosing the calfskin vellum hides, that even a tiny flaw in the very edge of the skin kept it from being selected. There were 6 calligraphers chosen from among many, only these were able to copy the unique hand of script that Jackson had created for this project. All calligraphy was written using hand cut goose quills. Only 6 artists working on the illustrations for the Bible. It took 2 years to finish just the layout, and 11 years to finish. Interestingly, facing pages were both done by the same calligrapher so that the writing would be the same on both pages keeping the symmetry of writing the same to the viewer.

 

The Saint John’s Bible Heritage Program is an international initiative for individuals and institutions to explore the artistic and spiritual beauty of The Saint John’s Bible with fine art limited editions created under the direction of Donald Jackson. The folio is printed on 100% cotton paper the same thickness and feel as the original calfskin used in the Bible. The gold has been added by embossing. As if you are viewing the shadow of an illumination from the back on the original, so has the shadow been printed on the back of the page that is illuminated on the folio. Such attention to detail.

 

Linda and Rich Page will be receiving all 7 folios soon and when they do, we will set up another time to view them all!

Welcome & Announcements:

**Candy was to host our annual picnic in August, but has a conflict with work.  Kathy Sullivan has agreed to host it in her backyard.  We will be doing 3 studio tours, ending at Kathy’s house.

**We will have gourmet popcorn with our scheduled video during our Sept meeting.

**Tom let us know that St. Michael’s Episcopal Church will be hosting a folio of the St. John’s Bible.  He has scheduled for us to view it at one of our upcoming meetings.  

**Leslie noted juried work presented in a recent edition of Lettered Arts Review.

**Sherry submitted Copperplate bookmarks and cards in a recent show at Commonwheel.

**Tom has been doing “Sayings of The Saints”, a quote a day in pointed pen.

**Jacque brought a number of water colored florals for us to see.

**Kathy Sullivan showed us 6 samples of the cards she made digitally for an upcoming “Tea” based show at Commonwheel. She also did linoleum block prints on tea towels through Spoonflower. (No samples shown)

**Jim had a stack of marbled papers he brought to advertise the upcoming workshop in June. 

 

Evening Presentation:

**Kristi had Roman exemplars of Susie Berringer’s for us to use as guides.  She demonstrated each letter, reminding us of the proper widths and proportions using a pointed pen in a straight pen holder.  The exemplar showing us where pressure was to be applied and lifted was especially helpful.  Once we went through the alphabet, we were encouraged to make the same letters at half the height, creating Tiny Writing!  She also had examples of work she had done in this hand.

Welcome & Announcements:

**Our meeting in February was canceled due to heavy snow.

**Anne Dye introduced herself as an art teacher and found out about us through Cottonwood!

**Candy received no new nominations for the Board, and the current Board agreed to do another year.

**Dues were due in February, so pay up if you want to remain in the Guild Roster!

**A current roster was passed around for us to inspect for any corrections.

**Jim brought engraving boards for the taking. They’d be excellent for drying envelopes with wet ink!

**TJ had a variety of bent nibs for sale 

**The paper marbling workshop June 10 from 1-am-3pm at Tammi Jo’s will be $30 per participant.

**Kristi Lyons had a Monty Python saying lettered in Uncial on Pergamon Paper, complete with an illuminated Versal!  She shared her first draft with us.  

 

Evening Presentation:

**TJ showed us another hand, using the A2 nib in position 2.  Position 2 creates a diamond shape when the foot of the nib is placed on the paper.  By keeping the nib oriented so the right-hand edge is facing north, one can create a hand that resembles Gothic/Black Letter with very little effort.  It isn’t a popular alphabet, so the examples are hard to find even on line.

**Candy was in Phoenix on business so Cyndi Haworth and Kristi Lyons filled in.

**We welcomed Anne Dye as our first-time visitor.  

**Our annual dues of $30 are due next month.

**Kimmi is hosting a card making workshop at her house on Friday, Jan 20 from 10-4 to build our guild card supply. She has generously offered to supply lunch!  

**Kathy S, Sherry W, Betsy W, and Nell lettered names on bookmarks at Cottonwood’s First Friday Gallery Open House.  Thank you, girls for volunteering your time to broaden our exposure in town.

Evening Presentation:

**Cyndi passed out precut pieces of black and white paper. The black paper was ½ the width of the white sheet it was to eventually be glued to.  She had an exemplar, passed around original examples, and showed samples on the screen/overhead. The art form was originally designed to teach children special understanding.  We were encouraged to use stencils or shapes using our own imaginations. She showed us how to cut into the center of the black paper for the best results. We got the hang of it pretty quickly and produced a nice variety.  Thanks, Cyndi!
