Black Letter with Kathy Sullivan

Welcome & Announcements:

**IAMPETH is in Denver this year from July 15-10.  Scholarships are available to residents who signed up as members prior to June of this year.

**The International Conference Rendez-Vous is being held outside of Montreal June 29-July6.  Look at John Neal’s website for a list of the slew of instructors this year!

**Please consider checking something out from our Traveling Library.

**Commonwheel’s Holiday Market is a great place to shop for Christmas gifts Nov 16-Dec 30.  

**Our Christmas party will be at Mary Rhoda’s this year.  The guild will provide the meat and we will bring the sides.  Candy will send more information in next month’s eDigest along with directions to Mary’s house in Black Forest.  Please bring 30 cards for our card exchange as well.

**There were extra sheets of linoleum available to take home.  Kathy said if they are put on a warming try they should soften up, making carving into them easier.

Show & Share:

**Tom showed us a picture of the mural he painted in SC recently with a team of helpers.  It was very realistic!

**Mary showed us some of her up-cycled paper crafts using a flour sack as a backdrop for adding embellishments, thanks to Candy’s class at the retreat.

**Carole showed us a picture of the bear print she carved out of linoleum, thanks to Kathy’s class at the retreat.

**Kathy H. brought the book “Elmore” to read aloud.  It is the story of a prickly porcupine who befriends his whole community by offering bundles of his quills to write notes to each other.  

Evening Presentation:

**Kathy presented Black Letter with samples of work done by Julian Waters and others after a little bit of history.  It is often referred to as Gothic and has a few variations such as Fraktur or Fractura. She had lined paper for us to follow along as she demonstrated most of the letters to include the Caps with their variations and optional flourishing.  She encouraged us to explore these so they aren’t so “boring” and more fun to work with.
