Welcome & Announcements:

**Carole told us about the YouTube channel Calligraphy Masters she started to watch in 2014.  It featured a video on Copperplate today.

**The response to our submissions to the Commonwheel Gallery wasn’t what many had hoped.  Several produced substantial pieces and had them professionally framed that didn’t sell.  Candy had a dozen travel journals sell in the first week.  She brought 30 more and they all sold. Karen sold about half of her hand painted signs Sherry sold a number of cards and bookmarks. TJ casually polled the group and the consensus was to forego Commonwheel next year and see if the 21C library would feature our work for a month next year.  TJ will call to see what might work.

**Lynn shared a trick for keeping bottles of ink from spilling… take a plastic lid, like from a box of oatmeal, and cut an X I the center.  Slip it over the jar and, wah-lah!

**She also told us about the Leuchtturm 1917 fine point gel pen she bought in Vail.

 

 

Show & Share:

**Jim brought a number of full sheets of Arches Text Wove he and his sister marbled in Karen’s garage last month.  He was willing to sell a full sheet for $10 and envelopes for $2. He also had 2 aprons he had marbled.

**Cecelia shared the pieces she tweaked for Michael Gold’s class she is taking on line and explained how to add dynamic elements to make the piece pop. She also brought a dress she made from fabric she designed!

**Dawn brought several samples and exemplars of Copperplate she recently rescued from her home in England.

 

Evening Presentation:

**Sherry used a mic so we could hear her tonight.  She had packets for those of us who missed her first session and new papers for the rest. She walked us through each capital letter of the Copperplate script, telling us which ones started with a compound stroke and where we needed to add pressure on each stroke. Her strokes were so fluid because she’s been lettering in this style for a number of years.  Thanks, Sherry!

**Next month’s annual picnic will be held at Cheryl’s on August 9^th.

 

Tips & Tricks:

**Using a very flexible nib will cause those of us with heavy-hands to lighten up-Lonnie

**Mulberry paper doesn’t wick up with ink-Kriti 

**Stadler pencil sharpeners have 2 holes for shorter and longer points and a white filter for removing lead dust after sharpening-Kimmi

**Tear a strip of paper you are lettering on as practice/to see how the ink takes to the paper-Suzie Beringer

**Black wet/dry files for filing pencil leads can be purchased at Sally Hanson-Lonnie

**Kristi found that washing the bister ink flowers she made with the triangle brush made a soft and pleasing new design she used to make cards.

**Kimmi brought her practice work from Suzie Beringer’s recent workshop.

**TJ brought 2 tree quote samples she plans to submit for the gallery show in Sept.

**Amy brought the birthday card Kimmi paid almost $5 to send!

 

Evening Presentation:

**Kristi put together a very colorful packet of samples using the Pilot parallel pen to create a variety of shapes and decorations she gathered from Pinterest etc. She carefully demonstrated stroke sequences in making a few designs, and the circular guides in the handouts were especially useful.  She encouraged us create borders with simple strokes to decorate bookmarks or envelopes.  It was an inspiring presentation.  Thanks, Kristi!!  

April 2022 Meeting

Quill Cutting with TJ                                                          

 

Welcome & Announcements:

**Annual dues of $30.00 should have been paid in Feb.  We are considering dropping anyone who hasn’t paid from the roster.

**The Board would like the recently published Scribe Surveys returned.

**The church custodian has moved out of town, leaving us to do our own set up and take down.  Please consider coming early by 6 pm and/or staying late to help with this responsibility. Thank you!

**A 3^rd small group has been added.  They will be meeting at Candy’s the 1^st Thursday each month from 9-12. Contact Candy if you’d like to join in!

**Our next workshop will be held at Who Gives A Scrap.  Susie Barringer from Bellingham, WA will be teaching. The cost will be $130 for the 2-day workshop, no supply fee. Registration will begin with checks mailed postmarked May 5^th or later.  Lynn will send registration forms out with what Susie is teaching.

**Lynn needs photos of sample work we plan to submit for the gallery show ASAP.  Please send them by email to friedoneway@comcast.net.

**Candy brought a hand-done cookbook the guild created in the 80’s (?) as a fundraiser to show us how far we’ve come!  Well before access to digital pictures and computers.

**Nell asked we make cards in appreciation for the Veterans who have served our country.  She plans to give them out on a patriotic holiday.

**Kristi has been working with the triangle brush and created a lovely card.

**Cheryl had 3-4 framed pieces she’s been working on in preparation for the gallery show this fall using gelli backgrounds and acrylics.  She also brought cutout work she did for a recent Mike Gold class she took on line.

**Cecelia also had samples of her cutout work from the same on-line class.

**Kimmi was on day 102 in her ‘Art A Day’ quest.  She brought in 2 pieces in small square frames, a paper globe made from strips of paper, and a wrapper for a disposable coffee cup. 

 

Evening Presentation:

**Tammi Jo brought naturally cured turkey feathers to cut into quills along with a green cloth and scalpel from the Army OR, and an overview of terms and the cutting process.  She gave a brief history of quills, walked us through the process a couple of times to familiarize us with what we were going to be doing, and helped anyone who needed some clarification.  We ran out of time to actually use them, but it was a good introduction for most of us.
