 Meeting Minutes 13 Apr 2021

Cyndi Haworth- Spencerian Lowercase

Welcome & Announcements:

**We had 2 newbies, mother and daughter Patty and Barb, guests of Carole Rudy.

**Cecelia and Deb brought samples of what they plan to show us at our upcoming Paste Paper workshop at Cottonwood next month.  Cottonwood has limited the number of students to just 10, but we are hopeful they will work with us to increase the enrollment.  They plan to make the paper all day Saturday and embellish it on Sunday. Students will need to purchase 8 quarter sheets of Arches Text wove.

**Leslie passed around an envelope to collect cards we were to have made to be given to the Myron Stratton Home as part of our community outreach program.  She also passed around a signup sheet for lettering names on bookmarks for Cottonwood’s First Friday event August 6th from 5-8 pm.

**Yves Letterme is offering a 6-week brush lettering video class through Acorn Arts this Saturday, April 17.

Book Review:

**TJ reviewed the helpful book, Uncommon Numbers by Brenda Casey & Barbara Brandt, freelance lettering artists from the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area.  She thinks every calligrapher should have this book to help with ways to add numerals to any hand.  The book is divided into four sections, one on exemplars, another on art pieces, one on commercial work, and the last section features typefaces a lettering artist could use to generate ideas for creating fun numbers.  Numerals are often overlooked in our normal presentation of various hands.  This little book brings them into the limelight where they deserve to be seen.

Show & Share:

**Cecelia brought pressure release homework from Yves on-line Romans class, and a few laser-cut wooden lettering pieces she cut at the 21C library.

**Kathy showed us 8 beautiful cards she made.  4 featured art work of nature from the area and 4 were of super cute working girls in the garden or on the farm.  We encouraged her to sell them!

**Kimmi used paste paper to create the backdrop of a Shakespearian poem.

**Cheryl had a number of large sheets of very colorful paste paper she created using additional pan pastels.

**Leslie brought a fun piece she lettered using a collection of words used to describe a friend who recently had a birthday.

**Deb brought a pen she created using her Scotties whisker hairs and a bent piece of wood.  She hopes to use it to create some wild strokes!

Evening Presentation:

**Cyndi presented a bit of history for Spencerian Lowercase including a few books she uses, guide sheets she has found helpful and free, and explained why she opts for iron gall ink to produce the delicate thins with the straight penholder as opposed to the oblique.  She recommends any 32#copy paper for practice work.   We were to position our pen at a comfortable position and turn our paper so the slant lines are directly in front of us so we were able to pull straight down.  She noted that Copperplate joins are very rounded while the Spencerian joins are more angular, like a Nike swoosh. We used the 6mm guide sheets for practice, but she normally writes smaller using the 4mm guides.  The one thing she stressed during the evening presentation was to keep the joins at a 32-degree slant.
